Coach Grey Giovanine has led Augustana College through over a decade of dominance in Division III basketball. With a program built upon a "Defend, Rebound, and Run" mantra, transition offense is one of the three pillars to his team's success. Giovanine shows you how he develops a high-octane, fast-break attack that seeks that wears down opponents at an alarming rate.
This video offers a complete presentation with lecture, game film, and practice footage to show you the strategies and drills that build an up-tempo transition offense. See how Giovanine gets his players to go from fast break situations, to secondary break, to continuity offense. He also gives you breakdown drills to help improve your team passing and to teach players their lane assignments.
Fundamentals Necessary to be a Great Transition Team
More than 15 exercises are on display in this open-practice video showing how Giovanine instills an attacking, aggressive mentality into his players. Segments range from passing drills that will improve your players' accuracy and ability to handle defensive pressure, to 3v0 player fast breaks that places rigorous demands on players to execute fundamentals such as passing, spacing, jump stops, and finishing at the rim. Teaching points include:
- Emphasizing, through drills, the motto of ‘fake a pass to make a pass' and how it leads to better accuracy.
- How spreading the floor, filling lanes, and passing ahead can lead to the ball beating defenders down the court for an easy score.
Learn how to score in under 4 seconds with options in the primary fast break. Giovanine walks players through how to outlet the ball and two options for advancing the ball quickly by passing up the sideline or crossing "Main Street." Players demonstrate the entire primary break progression with the 5 Lane Run drill. See how your players can change roles to maximize efficiency when a perimeter player other than the point guard gets the rebound. You will also find solutions for correcting spacing issues when players run the same lane in transition.
Giovanine gives you the keys to effectively perform a secondary break when your fast break options are taken away. See how to penetrate the defense with a relentless series of dribble drives and cuts off post feeds. Find out how to quickly enter the ball into the post and rotate players with Laker cuts to occupy the defense. Learn how to play off options created from kick outs by the post.
You'll see how to properly space off dribble penetration and how to connect sequential dribble drives to break down the defense. Maintain a consistent attack throughout the game by running - even on made baskets.
You will get to see two of Augustana's continuity offense sets. Additionally, you'll learn how to use "Punch" ball screens to strike before the defense is prepared. A 5-on-0 demonstration and the Circle the Wagons drill will show you how to snap into the Wide and ball screen continuity offenses should the defense manage to stop your fast break.
Coach Giovanine gives you everything you need to instill an effective running game with your team. From fast break situations, to secondary break situations to getting into continuity offense - if you want to score in 4 seconds or less, this video is a 'must-have!'
