Oakland University Head Coach Greg Kampe explains his defensive philosophy as he guides viewers through drills that can be used to teach closeouts.
Using on-court demonstrations, Coach Kampe shares eight different drills specifically designed to strengthen closeout skills. He begins with simple warm-ups that focus on teamwork, communication, and technique. With each drill, he emphasizes the importance of doing little things the right way, adding that little things take care of the big things and big things lead to championships.
After players have warmed up, Coach Kampe recommends 3v3 drills that players can use as they sprint around the half court, shutting down the opponents' ball screen and skip-pass action. Watch side defense and communication strategies improve as athletes master these techniques.
Coach Kampe continues his progressive closeout routine using 4v4 drills that incorporate the same defensive principles and actions used in the 3v3 drill. With this set of drills, however, he creates game-like situations to teach ball screen defense for flare, down, stagger, and screen-the-screener actions.
The DVD concludes with a demonstration of a drill that Coach Kampe favors for its aggressive rebounding and competition-building skills. Players will push each other as they look to fight for the right to stay on top of the drill.
Train players to challenge more shots this year without worrying about getting blown by on the drive.
