Iowa State basketball has recently been known for their explosive offenses. Heading into his second year as head coach, Steve Prohm has begun to change their identity. While still maintaining a powerful offense, Coach Prohm is bringing his defensive mentality to the table and looking to help the Cyclones reach new levels.
In this great on-court, instructional video, Coach Prohm breaks down some of the fundamental drills he uses on a daily basis to build his defense - the same drills he has used to take two different teams to the NCAA Tournament. By methodically moving from individual basics to team concepts, this video gives you a road map to improve player skill levels and continue the arc of improvement throughout the season.
Closeout and Denial Drills
An essential element of Coach Prohm's team is executing fundamental closeouts on a consistent basis. In each of the first five drills he introduces, the closeout is a highlighted skill. While each drill is different and combines other important defensive concepts, the closeout unites them all. Other concepts covered in these five drills are:
- Straight and angled closeouts
- Help defense
- Sprints and slides
All of these first five drills cover fundamental elements required to play great defense. Each drill can be incorporated into your practice easily and can be adjusted to your style of defense.
Prohm then hits one of the most complete drills shown in the video. The 6-Point Defensive drill covers each element necessary to having a complete defensive system:
- Playing the gap
- Denying the post
- Playing two passes away
- Giving early help
If your players are able to learn each aspect in this drill, they will always be a step ahead of their competition.
Coach Prohm adds two other drills that he refers to as "energizers," which builds the progression of the defense with additional defenders. Each of these drills allows athletes to work on valuable defensive concepts while also getting up and down the court in both 2-on-2 action as well as 3-on-3 play.
Prohm also focuses some time on help defense. Great man-to-man teams are successful because of their help side defense. The drills passed along in this video are fantastic teaching tools for this area of defense.
Disadvantage and Transition Drills
There are many times in a game where your team will have to defend at a disadvantage, and you need to teach and practice these situations to be prepared to stop them in a game. Prohm shares three drills that teach the defense to work hard and be accountable to make stops through the defensive rebound. Drills include:
- 4v3 Contest Drill
- 4v3 Disadvantage Drill
- 5v3 Transition Drill
You can easily modify the drills to add actions that you expect your next opponent to run.
This set of drills and instruction from Coach Prohm is valuable for any coach looking to build a defense that can help them win championships.

"Rarely do I sit through a clinic segment and wish it were longer, but this is the exception. Coach Prohm is high-energy and his teaching order is progressive and logical." - Customer Review
